Starz Play has entered an exclusive deal with Sonar Entertainment giving it the rights to stream Taboo, the forthcoming British drama television series starring, co-created and executive produced by Oscar-nominee Tom Hardy.
The eight-episode drama was created by Steven Knight, the Oscar-nominated writer of Dirty Pretty Things and creator of the hit TV series Peaky with Hardy and his father Chips and is produced by Hardy Son and Baker and Scott Free London and distributed worldwide outside the U.K. by Sonar Entertainment.
Set in 1814, Taboo follows James Keziah Delaney (Tom Hardy), a man who has been to the ends of the earth and comes back irrevocably changed. Believed to be long dead, he returns home to London from Africa to inherit what is left of his father's shipping empire and rebuild a life for himself. But his father's legacy is a poisoned chalice, and with enemies lurking in every dark corner, James must navigate increasingly complex territories to avoid his own death sentence. Encircled by conspiracy, murder, and betrayal, a dark family mystery unfolds in a combustible tale of love and treachery.
The series debuts in early 2017 exclusively on BBC1 in the UK, cablenet FX in the US, and STARZ Play in the Middle East.
Khaled Benchouche, SVP programming and acquisition at Starz Play, said: “This is a significant partnership that gives Starz Play exclusive rights to one of the most promising series of all time, further strengthening our commitment as a leading SVOD platform. We at Starz Play provide the best of Hollywood series and movies to the region, highlighted by the success of The Shannara Chronicles.
"The convincing storyline and Tom Hardy’s exceptional acting ability make Taboo a standout show amongst the most anticipated titles. It will be available with optional Arabic subtitles and French audio to meet our customers’ demands in the Middle East and North Africa,” Benchouche added.
Executive producers on Taboo are Ridley Scott and Kate Crowe for Scott Free London, Tom Hardy and Dean Baker for Hardy Son & Baker, and Steven Knight, with Timothy Bricknell as producer. Taboo stars Tom Hardy as James Delaney, Oona Chaplin as Zilpha Geary, David Hayman as Brace, Michael Kelly as Dr. Dumbarton and Jonathan Pryce as Stuart Strange. The series is directed by Kristoffer Nyholm and Anders Engström and reunites Hardy and Knight for their third collaboration following Locke and Peaky Blinders.
