How was business for Ducab’s fire-performance cable division in 2016?
Ashish Chaturvedy: Ducab’s FlamBICC range of fire-performance cabling products has contributed significantly to the growth of the business, year on year. In the previous year, the product was delivered to numerous regional and international projects, including Dubai Metro, Abu Dhabi International Airport, Al Maryah Central, and Abu Dhabi Marina City Development in the UAE. Approximately 10km of cables and wires were also supplied to the world’s first entirely 3D-printed office in the UAE, the Office of the Future.
Ducab is connecting the Office of the Future with a wide range of cable products, including Ducab FlamBICC fire-performance cables, Tuff DuFlex heat resistant flexible cables, and a range of Ducab Connect cable accessories.
What are the main applications for Ducab’s fire-performance cables in the Middle East?
AC: Ducab FlamBICC products are special fire-performance cables designed to perform and operate during fire conditions. [They are suitable for]various areas of application, such as in schools, shopping malls, and mass transit systems, where phased evacuation is vital to aid rescue.
Ducab’s NuBICC, nuclear-grade cables, support powering modern nuclear power plants. The NuBICC range covers the Non Class IE, R&S Class from 1kV to 15kV. To satisfy the most rigorous safety class requirements in nuclear power plants, Ducab has successfully designed and introduced halogen-free cables with an extended operating life.
Why did Ducab take the decision to open a laboratory for the testing of its fire-performance cables?
AC: One of the major challenges lies in the industry being flooded with sub-standard, low-cost cables, which often do not meet minimum required safety standards. This can lead to consumers looking at prioritising cost over important factors such as efficiency and safety.
Ducab is committed to working closely with the construction industry to ensure cables and accessories are certified to meet strict international codes of practice. The new fire test laboratory at Ducab Jebal Ali is equipped with state-of-the-art testing equipment operated by highly qualified and trained technicians, offering all types of fire and smoke tests.
What levels of demand are you seeing in the region for cables that meet the latest fire-protection stipulations?
AC: Dubai Civil Defence (DCD) recently revealed a revised UAE Fire and Life Safety Code, which requires the use of third-party independent inspections, and strict accountability with imposed fines for non-compliance.
Construction product regulations and procedures, regular maintenance, and third-party inspection ensure compliance and preference for the cables that meet the latest fire-protection stipulations.
How do you expect demand for Ducab’s fire-performance cables to develop over the coming year?
AC: We see demand increasing in 2017, as manufacturers and distributors look towards prioritising quality and efficiency.
Ducab manufacturing ensures all cables are subject to extensive testing during each phase of production, certified by the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) and the British Approvals Service for Cables (BASEC) UK to meet the latest BS EN, IEC, and IEEE standards, along with current BS 8519 Code of Practice, and the European CPR directive to be introduced on 1 July, 2017. These standards grant recommendations and guidelines to the industry for the selection and installation of fire-resistant power and control systems.
