Twitter and the internet yesterday evening abounded with rumours that the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, was on fire when the top of the 828m-tall super-tall tower appeared to be shrouded in smoke. In fact, this turned out to be low-hanging fog.
A Twitter user posted: "Heard that Burj khalifa is on fire, is this true or just a rumor?#burjkhalifa". Another wrote: "Fire at #BurjKhalifa - hope everyone is fine".
Police confirmed there was no fire, while security services at the Burj Khalifa confirmed that it was just fog. However, fire trucks had been seen at the building, it was reported.
Thick fog covered most parts of Dubai and neighbouring emirates on Tuesday morning as motorists reported near-zero visibility.
The fog, which continued well into the day, caused minor accidents, though no major ones were reported. It also caused traffic snarl-ups on various roads.
