The Dubai Municipality and the Dubai Central Laboratory (DCL) held the fourth Annual Quality Assurance for Sustainable Construction Materials Conference and Workshop on 14-15 December in Dubai.
The conference focused on the role of quality building materials in achieving higher standards for sustainability and safety in buildings and infrastructure.
As specific feature for the conference 2016, DCL teamed up Dubai Civil Defense (DCD) to introduce a new focus on ’fire performance of cladding and thermal insulation products’.
The session included representatives of Dubai Civil Defense, Andy Dean of WSP as well as leading fire testing laboratories in the UAE, who discussed on the issues of fire safety.
The conference featured technical lectures by international presenters from the US, the Middle East and Europe with the latest updates in their field of research.

The two-day event highlighted the international and regional approach to testing and quality controls, as well as the importance of specifications and standards.
“It created a platform for sharing experiences between the public and private sector, and attracted more than 150 delegates from government agencies, engineers, architects, laboratory specialists, and cement and concrete professions,” said a press statement from Dubai Municipality.
Main topics discussed on day one comprised: the role of research institutes and laboratories in improving quality control, fire performance of cladding and thermal insulation products, and on-site applications and inspections of sustainable construction materials.
Day two was reserved for a full day expert workshop, jointly held by DCL and ASTM International, dedicated to
cement and concrete testing.
According to the statement, this was one of the first workshops by ASTM in the UAE.
