Dubai’s largest urban project has completed five million work hours without injuries or accidents.

The Jebel Ali Sewage Treatment Plant's expansion programme is the largest urban project in the emirate.

Fahad Al Awadhi, director of Dubai Municipality’s (DM) sewage and irrigation department, said the agency’s health and safety initiatives have resulted in zero accidents on its major projects.

“By the end of April 2018, five million work hours were completed without accidents in the second phase of the of Jebel Ali Sewage Treatment Plant expansion,” Al Awadhi added.

DM’s project team expects seven million work-hours without accidents on the sewage development by the time it is fully complete.

Al Awadhi said consultants and contractors working on the $354m (AED1.3bn) project following health and safety measures implemented by DM, resulting in a high level of staff welfare and savings on equipment.

Work on the development, which began in May 2016, is 70% complete, with more than 1,900 engineers, technicians, workers, and other employees involved with the project.

Project works include the expansion of Jebel Ali Sewage Treatment Plant, with a capacity of 375,000 cubic meters / day.

Al Awadhi said the project consists of two main tracks for liquid and solid waste treatment, and contains a plant for the production of organic fertiliser from solid waste, which will be sold to the public.

Treated water will be pumped through a pipeline network covering all of Dubai, for use in irrigation of public parks. Part of it will be sold to developers and farm owners, DM added in a statement.
