Sharjah-based property developer Alef Group has opened the 37,000m² shopping mall, Zero 6, which has the largest IMAX cinema screen in the UAE.
The Zero 6 mall, named after Sharjah's telephone code, has an eight-screen cinema complex, food, drink, and retail outlets.
Local firm Omis Contracting won the main construction contract for Zero 6.
Key brands at Zero 6 include the emirate's first platinum branch of the Fitness First gym for women, which includes an indoor swimming pool. The mall has a Spinneys supermarket. Food outlets include Wagamama, Godiva, Sapori di Bice, and patisserie shop Angelina.
The mall is located in Al Juraina on University City Road, Sharjah.
Chairman of Alef Group, Sheikh Khalid Sultan Al Qasimi, said Zero 6 would boost Sharjah's status as a place of recreation.
"We are delighted to host an unrivalled range of premium dining, leisure and retail experiences in one exciting development, which will strengthen Sharjah’s reputation as a leisure destination and serve as an attractive meeting place for the local community."
Managing director of Alef Group,Issa Ataya, added the developer wanted "to create a holistic lifestyle experience" by moving beyond traditional retail concepts.
"Zero 6 is designed to appeal to a new generation of trendsetting consumers by providing a one-stop destination in Sharjah where people of all ages can socialise, relax, dine, shop, work out, and have fun, all in one convenient location," she said.
Ataya said the launch of Zero 6 was "simply the beginning for Sharjah’s premier lifestyle-orientated retail venue".
Sharjah's retail landscape is changing, with a number of projects underway. Expansion at City Centre Sharjah, another mall, was said to be nearing completion earlier this month. A number of new retail and dining outlets have already opened there.
Dubai-developer Nakheel formed a joint venture with Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) to develop its first project outside Dubai — a $20.4m (AED75m) retail centre in Sharjah.
