A journey that began in September last year culminates today, as two Emirati friends will hand over the trophy of the “Best Biryani” in Dubai and Sharjah.
The owners of Silver Spoon restaurant in Sharjah will receive the trophy presented by Mohammad Sultan Thani and Majed Al Shamsi on Sunday evening after the two men took on the task to find the “best mutton biryani” in the two emirates. Their request to find the favourite biryani restaurant had gone viral on social media.
With more than 63,000 followers on Instagram and 35,000 on Snapchat, the two men put up their visits on social media under the hashtag #bestbiryani in English and Arabic.
“It was just a simple question on Instagram and snapchat but we got so many names that we decided to check them out. We visited 54 restaurants in every nook and corner of Dubai and Sharjah,” Thani told Arabian Business.
“But we never informed these restaurants about this contest. We just went there as regular customers. Only after shortlisting five of them in May this year, we informed them of our competition. We told them we are coming to check out their biryani and asked them to serve us their best biryani.”
The two foodies said they based their selection on quality of ingredients, taste, presentation, cleanliness and price.
Silver Spoon in Sharjah’s Al Yarmook area costs just AED15, while the lowest price was for Pak Liyari – AED13.
Thani said they plan to continue their quest to find the best biryanis in other emirates and will soon turn their experiences into a documentary.
