Qantas Airline announced that it would be cutting 5,000 jobs after a posting a $252 million first half loss, the Australian news website reported.

The airline is seeking to cut costs by $2 billion in the next three years.

Qantas also requested the Australian government to give it a debt guarantee, but this was highly unlikely to happen.

According to reports, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said that Qantas was not a special case, and if help was given to them, it had to be given to all.
