Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has reportedly dismissed nearly 1,000 "surplus" employees, according to a report by Khaleej Times.

PIA president and chief executive air marshal Arshad Malik confirmed the decision during a meeting with adviser to the Prime Minister on finance, Abdul Hafeez Sheikh on Friday (August 30), Dawn News reported.

Malik outlined other measures were also taken to save costs of Pakistan's national carrier.

This follows Prime Minister Imran Khan chairing a meeting to discuss the carrier's business plan, and directed PIA to improve the performance of the airline.
