Netflix has introduced a new ‘smart downloads’ feature that will automatically delete an episode after it has been watched and download the next one for the user. Smart downloads enhances the download function first rolled out in 2016 by Netflix. This feature was introduced to allow Android and iOS users to watch selected Netflix content on their mobile devices when they are on the move or unable to connect to the net.

Smart Downloads is available on Android phones and tablets running the latest version of the Netflix app. The Smart Downloads feature only turns on when you're connected to Wi-Fi, so customers can avoid mobile data charges. The feature helps manage device storage because it will always delete the last watched episode before downloading the next one.

Netflix’s director of product innovation, Cameron Johnson, said in a blog post announcing the feature: “We know how annoying it can be to go through all your apps and delete files you no longer need; we also understand that when it comes to Netflix, the faster you can get to the next episode you want to watch, the better. We want to emphasise that giving consumers more control over their entertainment experience is at the heart of everything we do, and members can choose when they want to use smart downloads.”

Users who would rather keep older episodes on the device will need to turn off Smart Downloads and manually manage their downloaded content.
