MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS: Regional Telecom, a telecom operator in Northern Iraq, is set to launch the country's first LTE data network.

Regional Telecom has hired French telecom vendor, Alcatel-Lucent, to deploy the network.

Alcatel-Lucent will provide an end-to-end LTE solution including base stations, IP mobile backhaul, and evolved packet core (EPC).

Kawa Junad, chairman of Regional Telecom, described broadband services as “the lifeblood of the modern digital economy” and added that Iraq had been without widely available broadband for more than a decade, cutting off the Iraqi businesses and citizens from the rest of the world. “The introduction of LTE services in Northern Iraq promises to change that, making a significant contribution to the country’s efforts to rejoin the global community,” he said.
