The European satellite programme that provides location data to smartphones and other navigation systems has sufered from a major outage.

Known as Galileo, the European Union's Global Navigation Satellite System - or GNSS- is meant o be an alternative to the US' GPS (Global Positioning System) and Russia's GLONASS.

The European GNSS Agency has said the outage was due to a technical incident on the ground. In other words: extraterrestrial interference is not likely.
