India's Jio to start charging for off-net calls

As of October 10, Jio has stated that it will charge its customers for off-net calls. This is to recoup the Interconnect Usage Charge (IUC) imposed by the Telecoms Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

The charge has currently been set to INR0.06 (Dh0.0031) per minute. However, as soon as the TRAI reduces the interconnection rate to zero, the charge will be discontinued. This move is expected to take place on 1 January, 2020.

For on-net customers, calls will remain unaffected. Furthermore, Jio's user base can continue to call one another for free.

Over the years, Jio's free calls proposition has proven wildly successful since its launch in 2016. As of 30 June 2019, Jio had amassed 331.26 million subscribers.
