Kuwait’s Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Cultural Center, the country’s new opera house complex, caught fire on Monday, though no casualties were reported.
The fire engulfed the complex housing of the $770m venue just three months after its official opening, Reuters reported.
Firefighters on a crane sprayed water onto the complex, of which the blaze first hit the roof of the building. The fire did not affect the theatre and music buildings however and only resulted in material damage, the centre said in a statement.
The fire was contained and there were no casualties, the statement added.
Kuwait News Agency said firefighters responded promptly and effectively when the fire broke out as a result of construction work, quoting Abdulaziz Ishaq, head of the Emiri Diwan's Financial and Administrative Affairs.
The musical "Cats" was due to open at the complex on Thursday, and the center's statement said events and activities there would continue uninterrupted.
