Majid Al Futtaim has completed its $70.7m (AED260m) expansion of the 143-shop City Centre Sharjah mall.
Sharjah's first 12-screen VOX Cinema complex has been added to the shopping centre, along with 23 shops and restaurants, more car park spaces, and interiors and shopfront upgrades.
The expansion is part of Majid Al Futtaim's commitment to increase its investment in the UAE by $8.1bn (AED30bn) by 2026.
Key revamp features to City Centre Sharjah include expansion of the skylight roof in the new shopping wing, adding 736 car park spaces, as well as new toilets, baby changing rooms, and prayer rooms.
Brands such as Sharaf DG, Mumso, Home Box, Life Pharmacy, Nando’s, and Gazebo can now be found at City Centre Sharjah.
Much of the development work for the mall was completed by April 2018, with 22 retail and dining outlets opening around that time.
The size of the property has increased from a gross leasable area of 37,728m² to 51,428m².
A revamp of the mall comes amid a plan by the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority to attract up to 10 million tourists to the emirate by 2021.
So far, the figures suggest tourism numbers are on the up in Sharjah, which witnessed a 36% increase in European tourists between 2016 and 2017.
Meanwhile, Majid Al Futtaim has entered into a joint venture agreement with the Oman Tourism Development Company to build a massive mixed-use community set to become the new urban centre for Muscat.
The project will be rolled out over 20 years and is expected to create up to 30,000 jobs.
