A worker who suffered "serious injuries" after falling into a hole at a construction site in Abu Dhabi has been rescued.

The unnamed person was lifted from the hole by a joint team of rescue workers and medical crew after the individual was found to be trapped in the hole on Sunday morning.

The construction worker, who has not been named, was treated by paramedics at the scene of the accident, before being transferred to Mafraq Hospital, with what the Abu Dhabi Police called "serious injuries". 

The construction site is located in Al Shawamekh area of Abu Dhabi, where the hole is part of a building project to improve sanitation facilities for local residents. The identity of the construction worker's employer was not disclosed by the Abu Dhabi Police.

Following the accident, construction companies have been urged to take safety and security precautions with the upmost seriousness to mitigate the risk of occupational injuries.
