ISG is “absolutely delighted” that Pope Francis will hold a historic public mass at Zayed Sports City Stadium, a venue the fit-out contractor made major upgrades to last year.
The event will mark the first time that a pontiff visits the Arabian Gulf, and UAE leaders say this maiden visit highlights the country’s tolerance.
We welcome Pope Francis to the UAE. This historic visit will deepen the values of tolerance, understanding and interfaith dialogue.— HH Sheikh Mohammed (@HHShkMohd) February 2, 2019
We are bound by our humanity, our common values and belief in the future of humankind.
Welcome to the UAE in this, our year of tolerance .
More than 100,000 people will travel to Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, 5 February, for Pope Francis' public mass during his three-day visit.
The event is a particularly proud moment for ISG, the contractor behind last year’s refurbishment of Zayed Sports City Stadium, one of the oldest sporting venues in the UAE.
“About a year ago, ISG completed the refurbishment of Zayed Sports City Stadium, and we are absolutely delighted to see it host Pope Francis’ public mass for the first time in the GCC,” general manager for ISG in the Middle East, Scott McCulloch, told Construction Week.
“The stadium has been completely upgraded – from concourses and support areas to all electromechanical systems – so we are certain that it will be an ideal venue for this historic event. In fact, it is, in our view, the only public venue in Abu Dhabi capable of hosting this event because of its unmatched capacity in the capital.”
ISG completed the 30-week refurbishment in February 2018 after upgrading offices, the VIP lounge, public washrooms, flooring, fire and life system systems, and the replacement of four electricity substations.
The new stadium has sustainable lighting that reduces energy consumption, smart air-conditioning units connected to a building management system to allow airflow monitoring, and clean cooling and fire suppression systems.
