A major contract to complete 29,000 sqm of public spaces at Expo 2020 Dubai – worth AED169m – has been awarded to UAE-based contractor Aratec Construction, which includes a 5,000 m2 water feature, restaurants, utilities and landscaping elements.

Located next to Expo 2020’s Al Wasl Plaza, with work set to begin immediately, the public spaces will provide attendees a place to relax and dine.

Ahmed Al Khatib, chief site delivery officer – real estate and delivery, Expo 2020 Dubai said that the Expo 2020 represents an “incredible commercial opportunity for UAE companies of all sizes” which will ultimately result in a positive economic impact for the UAE.

Hamish Tyrwhitt, group chief executive officer of Arabtec Holding said the firm was pleased to be awarded its third major project as part of the Expo masterplan.

The Expo 2020 has gained a reputation for collaborating with different UAE-based companies to deliver.

Other UAE firms working on the project include Al-Futtaim Construction, Al Naboodah Construction, Besix, Khansaheb and Tristar Engineering.

Last month, Expo 2020 handed out its first FM-specific contract when it agreed terms with Dulsco to carry out the waste management in the run up to and during the global event.
