Bahrain is mulling the construction of a second airport to support the existing and under-expansion Bahrain International Airport (BAH) over the next 15 years, in line with the kingdom's Transportation and Telecommunications Agenda.

A passenger terminal building is already under-construction at BAH – making it one of Bahrain's largest construction projects – and is due to open in Q3 2019.

Bahrain’s Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, Kamal Ahmed, reportedly said that the new airport would ideally see construction kick-off in 2030.

According to a report by Construction Week's sister title Arabian Business, citing Gulf Daily News, the minister added: “If we succeed in making Bahrain a thriving country, we should be ready with the new airport by 2034.”

Five-thousand employees of Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) are being trained to more efficiently do their jobs when a new passenger terminal building opens later this year.
