In accordance with Oman’s plans to use more renewable energy by 2030 as part of its National Solar Energy Initiative, named Sahim, the sultanate has announced plans to install photovoltaic solar power panels in residential buildings as part of the project’s second phase.

Kickstarted by Oman’s Electricity Regulatory Authority, Sahim reportedly aims to provide renewable energy at a low cost in Oman through “the installation of 3-5 KW [solar] power systems in residential buildings” across the country.

According to a report by local daily Times of Oman, undersecretary of Oman’s Ministry of Oil and Gas, Eng Salem bin Nasser Al Awfi, said: “The cost of solar panels will be covered by an external investor in the property and the demand for this project will be high.”

The move is expected to result in bringing down consumer costs through the use of energy produced by the photovoltaic solar panel system.

Al Awfi said that other sources were also being researched for economic feasibility.
