The UAE has been awarded another honour by Guinness World Records for building the 32m-long arch steel Shammal Bridge in Ras Al Khaimah (Rak), which has overtaken a 26m-long structure in Poland to nab the top spot.

The 32.37m-long bridge can bear the load of 2,000 vehicles per hour and was completed in half the time it would have taken to build a similar bridge made of concrete.

The UAE’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Development (MoID), which collected the Guiness World Records certificate, said the bridge will last for 104 years and require less maintenance than other bridges that accommodate heavy traffic.

Shammal Bridge is part of the government’s Phase 2 expansion of Emirates Road to link Rak with the rest of the UAE. The bridge is located within the “mega” Rak Ring Road that was also recently completed, according to the MoID.

Arch steel structures comprise corrugated iron sheets that are installed in line with pre-approved designs and project requirements, HE Eng Dr Abdullah bin Mohammed Belhaif Al Nuaimi, the UAE's Minister of Infrastructure Development, explained.

The iron sheets are manufactured, coated, and plated in a factory prior to installation, he continued, adding: "These plates and other necessary parts are then transported to the required site in special containers for installation."

Al Nuaimi said breaking the world record was a reward for the “relentless efforts” of staff involved with Shammal Bridge.

“This new achievement is an added value to a series of achievements and successes secured by the country in general and the [MoID] in particular,” he added, according to a statement on MoID's website.
