Dubai Municipality (DM) has highlighted key initiatives, including the use of natural plants at a sewage treatment plant; a strategic sewage tunnel system project; the Al Mamzar Smart Park project; the Sa’fat Certified Engineer initiative; and the Young Scholar Initiative at the 21st Water, Energy, Technology, and Environment Exhibition (Wetex 2019), which is being held 21-23 October at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre (Dicec).

In a first of its kind project in Dubai – aimed at diversification of energy sources and reducing dependence on fossil fuels – DM is working on generating green energy from biogas at the Warsan sewage treatment plant.

The government entity highlighted the strategic sewage tunnel system project, which is the first to treat 400 cubic meters of hazardous industrial effluent per day. The project aims to receive all industrial effluents generated from the industrial sector in Dubai.

Another DM initiative displayed at Wetex 2019 was the smart waste collection and transport system, which stores, collects, and transports waste.

The smart initiatives at the Al Mamzar Smart Park project – including the provision of a smart bracelet for children that can be used to locate them; and the Smart Rescue service drone that has the necessary equipment and devices to save people from drowning – were showcased at the exhibition.

DM also focused on the Sa’fat Certified Engineer initiative, which offers specialised training and an exam in the Dubai Green Building Assessment system to all engineers working in the construction sector, as well as to engineering students.
