Abu-Dhabi based real estate developer IMKAN, whose portfolio comprises 26 projects spanning three continents, has opened a 100,000m2 Le Carrousel mixed-use development project on the corniche of the coastal city of Rabat in Morocco.

The $160m (MAD1.5bn) project comprises more than 200 residential seaside apartments; an outdoor mall with more than 120 shops and restaurants; a 123-key five-star hotel; a waterfront with 36 promenade shops and restaurants; as well as 12,000m2 of office space.

The project is expected to create more than 1,100 jobs once it is fully operational.

The circular design of the Le Carrousel project was inspired by Dutch artist M.C. Escher, whose work often includes paradoxical architectural designs of seemingly infinite loops.

The entire complex will be connected by paths and tracks accessible by foot or by bike.

The development will be accessible from multiple points in the city, located 25 minutes from the Rabat–Salé Airport, 15 minutes from the highway and downtown Rabat, and 10 minutes from Hay Riad.

Commenting on the project, chief executive officer of IMKAN, Walid El Hindi, said: “Situated off the Atlantic coast, the sea-side destination provides a unique 360-degree experience for both its inhabitants and visitors - from top tier apartments to exceptional restaurants, boutiques, offices, and a five-star hotel.”

El Hindi added: “With its prime location and bespoke residential and commercial offerings, we truly believe Le Carrousel is set to become one of the leading destinations in Morocco.”

One of the highlights of the development is “Le Phare du Carrousel”, which is an area within Le Carrousel that comprises a small number of private boutique homes.

The boutique residences come with a communal private gym, outdoor pool, and landscaped gardens, as well as other amenities such as an area for yoga and meditation; walking, jogging and cycling paths; and play areas for children.
