A demolition contractor has imploded the 600m-high structural-steel WECT tower in the United States. The seventh tallest man-made structure, the radio mast was rendered obselete by the switch from analog to digital signal in 2008.

Named after a local NBC-affiliated TV station, the North Carolina was last year donated along with its 77-acre site to the Green Beret Foundation (GBF) - a charity now scrapping the structure to raise over $100,000.

“It’s by far the tallest tower ever taken down by explosives,” said Mark Loizeaux, president of Controlled Demolitions Inc. (CDI), the Phoenix-based contractor that took the tower down voluntarily.
