The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) will open its first GCC on 15 December in Sharjah, UAE, as the body bolsters its regional presence.

RIBA is also opening an inagural base in Shanghai, China, amid plans to establish bases outside of the UK.

Sharjah and Shanghai are the first two cities it has identified.

The global professional membership body said its Sharjah base will be an “operational centre” that will increase support for architects.

“As a global professional membership body, we are pleased to expand our growing international network with a new office in Sharjah,” RIBA chief executive, Alan Vallance, said.

“The GCC is an important and growing market for architects and the construction sector, and a prime location for our first base in the region.”

“The RIBA sets the highest professional standards for architects, and champions excellence in the built environment. We look forward to forging new collaborations, opportunities for sharing expertise, and being able to offer even greater support to architects and partners in Sharjah and the wider Gulf region,” he added.

Vallance will inaugurate RIBA’s Sharjah office alongside Mehdi Taher, deputy consul general from the British Embassy.

The office marks an increase in RIBA’s regional activity, following a collaboration with the Dubai Land Department and participation at Cityscape Global and Dubai Design Week.

It is also planning to take part in Expo 2020 Dubai.
