Zafar Raja has been CEO of Serco Middle East since 2008. Born in Pakistan, Raja grew up in the UK, graduating with a Science degree from the University of London.
He headed Serco’s health division in the UK and was credited for enhancing the company’s health offering, by creating an innovative public and private sector JV with Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Trust and the acquisition of Grosvenor Health.
Since his move to the Middle East, Raja has been responsible for leading Serco’s growth in the region, overlooking its entry into the Qatari, Saudi Arabian and Iraqi markets. His arrival was met with a sevenfold increase; what used to be a modest workforce of 400 is today a staggering 3,000 and growing.
Raja also saw the firm expand its range of services, from initially offering air traffic services to providing services in aviation, transport, facilities management and technology.
The $640m Dubai Metro win Raja oversees has pegged Serco as one of the giants when it comes to transportation infrastructure operations and maintenance; the 2011 acquisition of JBI Raja led has armed Serco Middle East with the capacity to meet the increasing demand for complex FM services.
This broad spectrum of facilities management Serco offers is a reflection of Raja’s determination to cement the company’s footprint and increase the range of its operating portfolio in the Middle East.
