Michel Koopman has the dual responsibility of managing Anantara’s first city hotel in the UAE and ensuring the continued success of its existing resort properties on Sir Bani Yas Island and in Liwa — the Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara and Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara.
He opened Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara in the UAE capital in June of this year, introducing the first city resort from the Thai brand and beating some of the larger companies still due to open their hotels this year. In Abu Dhabi, Koopman’s goal is clear: to develop Eastern Mangroves as a corporate, government hotel, with everything at the property geared around meeting the needs of these particular guests and the Abu Dhabi locals — for which Anantara aims to be the preferred hotel.
Elsewhere, he is also overseeing the launch of Al Sahel Lodge by Anantara and Al Yamm Lodge by Anantara, both on Sir Bani Yas Island and scheduled to open within the next year.
Other properties have previously been announced by the company, such as Anantara Al Madina A'Zarqa Resort & Spa, 40 minutes outside of Muscat, which according to the brand’s website is due to open in 2013, but at the time of going to press, Anantara wasn’t able to provide further details. However, the group did reveal that two hotels have been signed over the past 12 months.
