The biggest challenge for UAE hoteliers is the pressure being caused by hotel rates, Jan Hanak, GM, Radisson Blu Dubai Deira Creek, revealed in an exclusive interview with Hotelier Middle East
“The rates are dropping massively and subsequently there is an impact on hotel profitability. Hotels need to find a way to protect profits for the owners as well as maintaining guest satisfaction," he said.
Speaking about retaining hotel staff, Hanak said that for him personally [as GM] “the important thing are the emotions and not to focus on the processes”.
“[we need to] make sure we are emotionally connected with the staff. They work for you as person, for the management team, for the whole [hotel] environment.
People work for people not for the company. We know what they want and [need to] take care of them properly, not just in terms of doing their paperwork – visa, accommodation – but [provide] human touches," he said.
In terms of how hotels are preparing for a digital future, Hanak believes that processes need to be streamlined and put under a singular cloud platform.
“This is so all the different systems are going to be much more efficient, and it will help with communication, guest requests, and general efficiency of the staff,” he said.
Hanak recently attended the Great GM Debate Advisory Panel at the ITP offices in Dubai’s media City on 11 June 2019. The Great GM Debate takes place on 24 September 2019 in Dubai.
