Hotels in Dubai are expected to comply with Dubai Sustainable Tourism’s mandate within 18 months, which is a Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (Dubai Tourism) initiative.

The requirements, which cover performance metrics, energy, waste management, guest education and employee training, have been developed to map out regulations for hotels to support positive change within the industry.

To regulate compliance, Dubai Tourism will begin auditing the performance of the hotels after the 18 month period. Properties are expected to finalise their operations within that period with the exception of the Carbon Calculator tool, which came into effect in January 2017.

45% of the industry has already completed a series of training sessions by DST about the sustainability requirements with further sessions planned through Q2.

Setting up a purchase plan to support goods, ensuring 75% of the rooms are non-smoking, forming a sustainable committee and using clean modes of transport are a few of the requirements hotels are expected to comply with.

Yousuf Lootah, executive director, Tourism Development & Investments, Dubai Tourism, said: “The 19 Sustainability Requirements have been launched in an effort to transform Dubai into a leading sustainable tourism destination.

“The regulated guidelines will help promote energy conservation and encourage sustainable practices across the local tourism inventory. Following the grace period, these guidelines will be enforced through a structured monitoring process and reporting mechanism to ascertain the outcome and quantify what more is required to reach the agreed targets.”
