Diriyah is set to be entirely restored and reimagined, adding luxury retail spaces, and more than 100 restaurants and cafes to the 7 sq km space.
November 19, 2019 will mark the formal inauguration of the Diriyah Gate project with the cornerstone being laid. The inauguration underpins the kingdom’s larger vision of welcoming in more international visitors and showcasing the leisure and culture opportunities in the country.
The ‘gigaproject’ will be house various museums and galleries and a selection of ‘culutural and educational experience’. The space will have more than 20 hospitality brands sitting inside, including Aman Resorts.
Diriyah at its centre houses a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was formerly the capital of the first Saudi state in 1774 AD. The historic city was first established on the north western edge of Riyadh in 1446 AD and is now being reworked into the country’s latest tourism hub.
Jerry Inzerillo, CEO of Diriyah Gate Development Authority, said: “There is only one Diriyah. Only this place can tell the story of the Saudi people and inspire new generations to commit to the dynamic vision of the future. This is truly a momentous time in this extraordinary country, and I am proud to lead a world-class team in the development of this historic site that is destined to become a global cultural icon and one of the world’s greatest gathering places.”
He added: “As the first home of the Saudi nation, it is important that Saudis are the backbone behind the success of Diriyah Gate, contributing to its unique identity. It is important therefore that the inauguration be designed and created by Saudis in honour of the heritage of their forefathers.
