24,000 tourists visit Saudi Arabia in 10 days
The country is working on moving away from its reliance on oil and is pushing tourism aggressively

After opening its shores to tourists a few weeks ago, Saudi Arabia registered a total of 24,000 tourists in the 10 days after it issued tourism visas for the first time.

On 27 September 2019, Saudi Arabia announced that it would offer tourist visas to citizens from 49 countries, sister publication Arabian Business reported. "In 10 days, some 24,000 foreigners entered Saudi Arabia on a tourist visa," the kingdom's state television reported

Prior to this announcement, Saudi issued visas only to Muslim pilgrims, foreign workers and recently to spectators at sporting or cultural events.

Earlier this week, Saudi Arabia annoucned that it will allow foreign men and women to share hotel rooms without having to provide proof that they are related.

The country also dropped the strict dress code for foreign women. Foreign women will not need to wear an abaya, however they will be instructed to wear “modest clothing,
