We catch up with Hyatt Place Dubai/Wasl District assistant hotel manager Tanish Gulati.
• What drew you to this role?
After my graduation, I received many opportunities other than to work in hotels but this is what I’ve always wanted since the very beginning, to join the hotel industry. For me it has always been very dynamic and constantly evolving. I have worked in various departments such as reception, concierge, reservations, revenue and other leadership roles. I have been a part of six pre-openings across India and UAE. For me it is always a good leader who can take care of its people and make a hotel successful. I wanted to be that leader, and being an assistant hotel manager with Hyatt Place Dubai Hotels, I believe that I am fortunate to handle this important position.
• What has been the most challenging part of your job?
I would say that I am a people-oriented person. I ensure that my team and I make our guests feel happy, satisfied and safe when they are staying with us. As the industry is changing expeditiously and travellers also expect something new all the time. Therefore, sometimes it is challenging when guests need something that your hotel doesn’t serve.
• What are the three key things that any successful hotel manager person should have in mind?
Ethics - Doing what is right for everyone involved is the ethical thing to do. I’m reminded of a phrase from Dale Carnegie's book, How To Win Friends and Influence People, "A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still."
Know Your Competition - Start by looking at the marketing strategies of your competitors. Some of that should be easy to find because, after all, your competitors’ ad campaigns are publicly visible.
Stay Well-Read - Marketing is an art as well as a science. You and your team need to generate creative ideas that will resonate with potential customers.
• How do you keep your team motivated?
My team is very important for me. I provide them with a pleasant place to work. I ensure that they get the opportunity for self-development. A team will be more valuable to your organisation, and to themselves, when they have opportunities to learn new skills. We all make mistakes, it's part of being human. The key is to learn valuable lessons from those mistakes so we don't repeat them again. When members of your team make honest mistakes, don't punish them, instead encourage them to try again.
• What has been the biggest achievement of your hospitality career so far?
I have had a progressive career so far; from Hyatt Regency Delhi to UK, being a front office manager to revenue manager and now assistant hotel manager. Apart from this I would say I have earned a number of good friends from this industry.
• Name the best part of your job.
Meeting people from different parts of the world, knowing their cultures, exchanging good values, and leading a team with innovative ideas complete my day.
