According to Jumeirah, the chefs had to compete in three categories —Global Chefs Challenge, Global Pastry Chefs Challenge and Global Young Chefs Challenge - Hans Bueschkens Trophy.The competition was judged by Garth Schnier, head judge and seasoned competitor; Hossam Soliman, president of Egypt Chefs Association; Andy Cuthbert , continental director and general manager at Jumeirah Creekside Hotel; Sanet Prinsloo, former association president from Namibia; and Nadine Demmier and Stuart McClarty both from South Africa.

Chefs Mario Coelho and Leon Rozario from Madinat Jumeirah and Jumeirah Creekside Hotel were named runners-up at the Global Chefs Challenge - Africa & Middle East Regional semi-finals in Pretoria, South Africa.
