Marriott International has starting asking its employees to take temporary leave as hotel demand across the globe plummets. According to CNN Business, tens of thousands of workers could be asked to take leave in the coming weeks and months.

All levels of Marriott employees could be hit by the decision, from housekeepers to GMs. Marriott said in a statement to CNN Business that its business has been "experiencing significant drops in demand" at its hotels because of the pandemic and is "adjusting global operations accordingly."

"We are working quickly to mitigate the impact to our business while also focusing on assisting our associates, our guests and our owners," a Marriott spokesperson said. "While the ultimate impact is difficult to predict at this time given the fluidity of the situation, we remain confident in our long-term prospects."

In Dubai, hotels have had a challenging March. According to data from STR, hotels in the emirate reported drops across average daily rate (ADR), revenue per available room (RevPAR) and occupancy. Compared to the same point last year, ADR at the start of March fell by 20.4%, RevPAR by 42.9% and occupancy by 28.2%.

Marriott added 8,000 keys to its Middle East pipeline last year.
