Kuwait's Equate Petrochemical Company recently won three honours at the 2018 American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) GCC Excellence Awards.
The compnay was honoured with the Platinum Award for Manufacturing, which it is winning for the 10th consecutive year, the Gold Award for Excellence in Engineering and Construction, and the Gold Award for the Best HSE Initiative.
Organised by the Kuwait Chapter of ASSE, the award ceremony is an annual event that recognises organisations in the Arabian Gulf region that have made significant strides in investing and managing workplace risks and developing environment, health and safety (EH&S) performance.
Mohammad Al Shamary, EH&S director, Equate, said, "Achieving excellence is not about tools and policies, but it is about having an integrated EH&S culture. This is an essential part of the company's success and we will continue to strive to get even better in our EH&S practices. Our highest priority is the health and safety of our people, communities and environment. It is an honour to be recognised by ASSE for excellence in our EH&S efforts.”
Equate's EH&S achievements include a number of initiatives. These include establishing Kuwait's only seawater cooling towers and the country's first carbon dioxide recovery project as well as being the first company in Kuwait to sign an agreement to reduce CO2 emissions in ocean transportation.
Equate is also the first petrochemical company in the Middle East to obtain the Responsible Care 14001:2015 certification from DNV-GL.
