Living its value of being a 'responsible' company that contributes to the wellbeing of the community and continuing its key role in enhancing public awareness on environment protection and waste management practices, Borouge organised a walkathon event at Abu Dhabi Corniche and a clean-up campaign in Ruwais as part of its annual 'Waste Free Environment' campaign.
Over 1,700 school students, company employees and members from the Abu Dhabi community participated in the sixth edition of the campaign to increase awareness on recycling and stopping the irresponsible disposing of waste in the environment.
Initiated by the Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA), the Waste Free Environment campaign is held with support from Borouge’s strategic partners: Tadweer (Centre of Waste Management – Abu Dhabi), Abu Dhabi Department of Education & Knowledge (ADEK), as well as Abu Dhabi Municipality.
“The walkathon in Abu Dhabi was an exciting activity that school children and all members of society enjoyed, and we were pleased to deliver our message under the theme of ‘I don’t litter’ highlighting that protecting our environment starts with everyone to act responsibly and adopt appropriate ways in getting rid of their waste,” said Ahmed Omar Abdulla, CEO, Borouge.

Dr Salem Al Kaabi, acting general manager, Tadweer, said: “Tadweer strives to support and take part in all the events and campaigns that aim to educate the communities on preserving the environment. The Waste Free Environment campaign seeks to raise awareness on the importance of segregation, reusing and maintaining the overall appearance to encourage community members to implement efficient waste management practices. This comes in line with Tadweer’s objectives to foster a conscious community and turn waste into an economic driver.”
“Borouge organises this social responsibility campaign to highlight the fact that plastic is not the main reason behind litter problem, it is rather the behaviour of some irresponsible people who leave their waste behind carelessly, polluting the environment,” said Maitha Al Marashi, CSR advisor, Borouge. She noted that instilling the principles of reusing and recycling plastics among members of the local community, particularly school children, would largely help create an environmental culture on the best practices the public should adopt for managing their waste in order to keep our environment clean and preserved.
“We decided to do this walkathon along the Corniche to show people how beautiful our environment is and how important it is to commit to ‘I don’t litter’,” added Al Marashi.
The school children participated in the walkathon showed much excitement while learning from Borouge about the importance of reusing and recycling of plastics as an effective way to solve the litter problem. They have also learned about the interesting and less obvious applications of plastics and how much people rely on plastics in their daily lives.
In Ruwais, where Borouge has one of the world’s largest plastics complexes, the company’s and ADNOC’s employees joined a large number of enthusiastic school children from the community to clean-up the Shuweihat Beach in Jebel Al Dhanna, and some of Borouge’s employees and contractors also implemented a housekeeping campaign to clean-up the facilities in their domain.
Due to its international footprint, Borouge also held a ‘Waste Free Environment’ clean-up campaign in Mumbai on 23 February and will hold additional campaigns in Asia in the coming months.
