Four killed by fire at ONGC’s Uran plant, including general manager

According to a press note released by India’s Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) at 8:45pm on 3 September 2019, strong smell of hydrocarbon was reported by fire station to process control room at 06:47am on the same day at Uran plant of the company.

Immediately, resident production superintendent (general manager, production) rushed to the area in full safety gears. A fire tender also reached the site immediately with CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) personnel in full safety gears. Major fire incident occurred at 06:55am.

All out efforts were made to control the fire and fire was brought under control by 08:55am with firefighting by fire section, Uran plant, as well as with the help of fire tenders from MARG (Mutual Aid Resource Group).

Fire was completely extinguished by 10:00am. Three CISF fire personnel who had come along with fire tender and the resident production superintendent succumbed to fatal injury, according to the press note issued by the company.

Gas processing was curtailed to maintain supplies to plant’s gas turbines for power generation and to meet full requirement of Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) and remaining gas from Mumbai Offshore was diverted to ONGC’s Hazira plant. Meanwhile, the offshore crude supply remains unaffected, the press note further stated.

The location of fire was near demineralised water plant (oily water sewage pit) and CISF security cabin, which is outside the main process area. The impact of fire in local vicinity is nil, as per the press note.

Meanwhile, local media identified the deceased as CISF fire personnel Eranna Nayakka, Satish Prasad Kushwaha, and MK Paswan, and ONGC’s general manager (production) CN Rao.
