Google may be overhauling their Messages app to become a rival to Instagram and Snapchat.

XDA Developers revealed that Google is testing augmented reality camera filters within the messaging app and a developer managed to get the feature to work. The experimental effects button is baked inside Android messages’ camera button and not the standard camera app that every phone has.

Google’s currently testing a few effects which include a firework display and a halo around your head, the developer noted the great accuracy of the filter.

The filters are few but work just like Instagram and Snapchat’s face filters do. Google’s supposedly trying to let the user send these messages via MMS but should also be able to be sent via SMS and Google’s Rich Communication Services (RCS). There’s no word officially when this feature will be out but it appears to be positioned to compete with Apple’s iMessage.
