UAE's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has asked residents to update WhatsApp as a precaution following reports that some accounts may have been hacked

The notice was posted on TRA's Twitter page.

WhatsApp has recently admitted that a security flaw in its messaging tool has enabled cyber attackers to infiltrate some devices and install a spyware.

According to a BBC report, "Attackers used WhatsApp's voice call function to ring a target's device. Even if the call wasn't picked up, the surveillance software could still be installed because of that "vulnerable VOIP" not being secure enough. The call then may have disappeared from the device's call log because hackers had control of the app."
